Driven by the crankshaft, the serpentine belt can power up to four systems—the alternator, cooling system water pump, air conditioning compressor, and power steering pump. Without a working serpentine belt, the engine can overheat or lose electrical power. A broken belt will require your vehicle to be towed. Belts are one of the most overlooked components on a vehicle, and failed belts are the cause of many roadside break downs. Loss of the belt will also result in loss of power steering.
